Swati Dandekar Announces Formation of Exploratory Committee
PRESS RELEASE:

SWATI DANDEKAR TO EXPLORE RUN FOR 1ST DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL SEAT

MARION, IA — May 10, 2013 — Swati Dandekar (Marion Democrat) is announcing she is exploring a run for the 1st District Congressional seat. An exploratory committee chaired by State Senator Wally Horn of Cedar Rapids and Tina Patterson of Marion has been formed. Dennis Naughton, a Marion attorney, will serve the committee as Treasurer.

“Over the past several weeks I have been encouraged by friends across the district to enter the race. I am honored to have served in the Iowa legislature and then to be given the opportunity to serve as member of the Iowa Utilities Board. I am exploring the opportunity to once more serve in elected office because I know it is important to the people living in Northeast Iowa to continue the strong representation established by Congressman Bruce Braley. We must keep this seat in Democratic hands. I am humbled by the number of people who have reached out to me, urging me to run and citing my ability to put good public policy before politics, as the economy of Iowa and the 1st Congressional District continue to grow,” Dandekar stated.

Dandekar is a former Iowa legislator representing the Marion area in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2003 to 2009 and in the Iowa Senate from 2009 to 2011. She was appointed to the Iowa Utilities Board in 2011 by Governor Terry Branstad.

During her years in public office she was a strong voice for job creation, working to bring advanced technology and skilled jobs to the state. Born in India, Swati came to Iowa in 1973. As a proud naturalized American citizen she believes the foundation for success is an excellent education. Dandekar recognizes the importance of agriculture, advanced manufacturing, technology and renewable energy to the district and believes that the future opportunities in Northeast Iowa will stem from expanding these sectors.

“I will spend the next several weeks talking to voters in the first district, my friends, and of course my family. Together we will make a careful and thorough assessment of the race. I will make a final decision sometime this summer,” she concluded.
